Herefordshire Beacon is better known by the name of the fortress on its summit: British Camp. The hill rises to 338 metres, but it is the earthworks that make it memorable. Tiers of ramparts and ditches wrap around the top, and they are still sharply defined more than two thousand years after they were dug.
The hillfort
British Camp is an Iron Age hillfort, probably first built in the 2nd century BC and later enlarged. In the medieval period a small ringwork-and-bailey castle was built inside it, on the highest part of the hill. The site has been a scheduled monument since 1923. The Malvern Hills Trust, which owns and cares for it, describes it as one of the best examples of a hillfort in Britain.
The Trust asks cyclists and horse riders to keep off the hillfort so the ramparts are not worn away. Walkers should stay on the main paths for the same reason.
Around the hill
British Camp Reservoir lies on the eastern slope below the summit. The ridge continues south over Millennium Hill and Broad Down towards Hangman’s Hill and Swinyard Hill. Along the way you pass Giant’s Cave (also called Clutter’s Cave), a small cave cut into the rock.
