The Shire Ditch is a bank and ditch that runs along the crest of the hills north and south of British Camp. The Worcestershire Beacon appears to mark its northern end. Walk the ridge and you are often following it.
Two stories
The traditional story is medieval. In 1287, after a dispute over hunting rights, Gilbert de Clare, Earl of Gloucester, is said to have dug the ditch to mark the boundary between his chase and the lands of Thomas de Cantilupe, Bishop of Hereford. De Clare was known as the “Red Earl”, which gives the ditch its other name, Red Earl’s Dyke.
Newer research points to a much older origin. The National Trust says at least part of the ditch is far older than the 13th century. Some accounts describe it as a late Bronze Age boundary from around 1000 BC. A 2018 guide from the Malvern Hills National Landscape says its origin and purpose are still uncertain.
Visiting
The ditch is a scheduled monument. The Malvern Hills Trust asks cyclists and horse riders to keep off it, and walkers can help by staying on the paths.

British Camp and Giant’s Cave circular

Over the British Camp hillfort and south along the ridge to the little Giant’s Cave, returning below the hills. A great family outing.
