Weather on the hills: what to expect
The Malverns are not high, but they stand alone above flat land, so they catch the weather.
Colder on top
The summits rise a long way above Great Malvern’s streets. Air cools as it rises, so the tops are usually a couple of degrees colder than the town, before you add wind chill. The forecast on this page is adjusted to summit height.
Wind
The ridge runs north to south, side-on to the prevailing westerly winds. On a breezy day in town it can be hard to stand still on the Beacon. If gusts are strong, use the lower paths along the flanks of the hills.
Low cloud and views
Cloud can sit on the summits when the valleys are clear. Paths are well trodden, but in thick mist the ridge path is easy to lose where it splits. For the big views, pick a clear day after rain has cleared the haze.
Storms, ice and heat
Avoid the ridge in thunderstorms. In winter, grass and rock on the steeper paths can freeze even when the town is thawing. In summer there is little shade, so take more water than you think you need.
