Annual Presentation Evening
Friday 29th November 2002

An announcement was made that 1017 (Malvern) Squadron, Air Training Corps are to be sponsored by QinetiQ of Malvern over the next four years for BTEC acedemic and technical qualifications. The Air Cadets achieve these nationally recognised awards in Aviation Studies and other similar subjects.
Awards for this year were presented by Group Captain Holmes, President of the 1017 (Malvern) Civilian Committee to Cadet Warrant Officer Caroline Tromans, Cadet Warrant Officer Joanne Hoare, Sergeant Katie Martin and Corporal Martin McCanne.

New Sports Trophy
Also present at this event was Councillor Mary Wilkinson,Cllr Mary Wilkinson with the Paul Wilkinson TrophyChairman of the Malvern Hills District Council who donated a new Sports Trophy dedicated to her son an ex-pupil of Worcester Grammer School who was also an Air Cadet. The Paul Wilkinson Trophy for Sport was presented to Sergeant Katie Martin for her total commitment to sport. She represented 1017 (Malvern) Squadron at Wing Sports and was selected to represent the Wales and West Region.

Breaking the Record
Flying scholarships are treasured opportunities and enjoyed by everyone who takes part. Corporal Richard Carson was no exception particularly when at 16 years of age he was awarded a Gliding Scholarship. He attended the week long course at Hullavington in Wiltshire and despite getting acute tonsillitis and being sent home for four days, on his return to Hullavington, he went on to break the course record when he flew solo in a Viking Glider after 39 dual launches having received just three and a half days training. Corporal Carson was awarded the Silver Glider Pilots Wings at the presentation evening and was commended for his achievement at such a young age.

Corporal Richard Carson who also plays saxaphone had the honour to be selected as one of 35 musicians chosen from the whole of Great Britain to attend RAF Cranwell for a week. He then played in a concert with the Band of the RAF College and is now a member of the Air Training Corp National Concert Band.

Air Cadets in School
Pilot Officer Nancy Mead visited Chase School and Dyson Perrins School in November 2002 to give a presentation about the activites of Air Cadets. It is hoped that she will visit Hanley High School and Malvern Girls and the Queen Elizabeth High School Bromyard in 2003.

2003

Flying in to the New Year with no time to breath.

Having flown solo after three and a half days training Corporal Richard Carson has been selected to train as a Flight Staff Cadet with The Air Training Corps Viking Glider School at Hullavington, Wiltshire. Corporal Carson attended a week long course over the Christmas period, he continues his training two weekends every month until qualifying as a Glider Pilot Instructor.

Corporal Carson, who also plays saxaphone , has also been selected for the Annual Music Camp at RAF Cranwell, Lincolnshire for the second year running

Sporting for the Wing
Warrant Officer Caroline Tromans, Sergeant Katie Martin and Cadet Jessica Izzard have all be chosen to attend RAF Cosford in February 2003 for Senior Hockey Trails. All have represented West Mercia Wing before and are hopeful that they will go on to represent the Wales and West Region and ultimately The Air Training Corp. Warrant Officer Caroline Tromans and Sergeant Katie Martin have also recently achieved Level 1 in the Hockey Coaching Course and hope to qualify at the next level in 2003
